Overview

Backup and restore sticky notes

Procedure

To backup the sticky notes we need to backup below two locations:

1. On Windows 10 1607 or later: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbwe\

2. On Windows 8/7 or Widows 10 1067 lower: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Sticky Notes\

The classic Sticky Notes store the data in a .snt file (located at C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Sticky Notes\), whereas the current Sticky Notes app stores the data in a .sqlite file (located at C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState)

There could be scenarios that user has backed up the sticky notes data in the classic format (legacy format) by backing up data from location C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Sticky Notes\, and want to restore the sticky notes on On Windows 10 1607 or later machines.

In this case, This classic format is not supported on the destination machine and we need to save the sticky note data on the current location: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState

Below is a few third-party articles that explain how we can convert the legacy formatted .snt file to the current file format supported by the sticky notes in plum.sqlite file.

To backup sticky notes from Win 10 1607 or later machines, we need to configure custom backup share in the profile to backup below location:%LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbwe
