License utilization

CloudRanger brings enterprises enhanced control and monitoring of the license consumption depending on the subscription plan. Administrators can now generate Licensing reports for an overview on the license consumption and will be notified when the subscription limits are exceeded.

Key advantages

  • Enhanced control with license utilization reports.
  • Gather business insights with enhanced monitoring and tracking of license utilization.
  • Notifications at the Organizational level on percentage license utilization across accounts.
  • Improved interface for Elite and Enterprise users to assess your business requirements and choose to upgrade your current plan, as appropriate.

License consumption on CloudRanger

The number of AWS resources managed via CloudRanger on which an activity has been performed are counted towards the licenses per month.
[A month is determined based on the subscription start date plus 30 days.]

In other words, the total number of unique resources with any activity on the console or via APIs are counted towards the license count for that month.

Notes:

  • Resource refers to a unique AWS EC2 instance, EBS volume, VPC, database, DynamoDB table, Redshift cluster, or a DR instance, managed on CloudRanger, within a 30-day period. Snapshots do not count towards the resource count.

  • Manage refers to any action performed on that resource via CloudRanger, such as backup, restore, clone, delete, stop, or start.

How licenses are calculated

The point-in-time license consumption is calculated as described in the following table:

 Resource type

 Considerations

License consumption

EC2 Instance

EC2 instance with EBS volume

EC2 part of backup policies

1 license for EC2 instance.
EBS volume not counted separately

EC2 instance with EBS volume

Manual backup of EC2 instance

1 license for EC2 instance.
EBS volume not counted separately

EBS + EC2 Instance
(same EBS volume attached)

EBS volume and EC2 instance part of different Backup Policies (not part of same policy)

2 licenses:
1 license for EC2 instance plus
1 license for EBS volume

EBS + EC2 Instance
(same EBS volume attached)

EBS volume part of a Backup Policy
EC2 instance part of a Resource Schedule

2 licenses:
1 license for EC2 instance plus
1 license for EBS volume

EBS Volume

EBS part of backup policies

1 license for EBS volume

Manual backup of EBS volumes

1 license for EBS volume

RDS instance
(Includes Aurora, Document DB, and Neptune)

1 license for each RDS instance.
DB snapshots do not count towards licenses.

DynamoDB Tables

1 license for each DynamoDB Table

Redshift Clusters

1 license for each Redshift Cluster

Note: You can view and monitor all resource activity via the Licensing Report. For more information, see Licensing Report.
