Unable to activate Windows license after restore as an instance from snapshot

Problem description

Unable to activate Windows license with AWS Activation tool after restore as an instance from snapshot.

Cause

This happens due to AWS limitation while restoring an instance from snapshots. Restoring as an instance directly from snapshots does not use the launch configuration of the original server.

Resolution

This issue can be resolved if you create AMI backups from instance. Once you perform AMI restore, it will allow you to activate Windows with AWS Activation tool.
