Backup Groups data
Overview
You can schedule either automatic backups or perform a manual on-demand backup.
Before you begin
Before you initiate a backup operation for Microsoft Groups data, ensure the following:

Go through the support matrix and inSync supported tasks for Microsoft 365 app. For more information, see Introduction.

Complete the required inSync configurations for Microsoft Groups. For more information, see Configure Druva inSync to protect Groups data.
Auto-configuration of Groups for backup
You can use default or custom configuration settings to schedule backups for the configured Groups.

Procedure
- Sign in to inSync Management Console and navigate to Microsoft 365 > Groups.
A page that lists all the discovered groups appears. By default, the status of all the discovered groups is in the Not Configured state. -
Click Auto Configuration. Enter the following details in the Auto Configuration wizard and click Save.

Auto Discover Groups for backups |
Select this checkbox if you want to discover new groups automatically. The discovery process runs every 24 hours. This setting is enabled by default. |
Auto-assign storage |
Select this checkbox if you want to assign storage for any newly discovered group automatically. Assignment of storage is necessary to back up a group. |
Backup frequency |
Select the frequency of backups. By default, it is once a day. You can set the frequency as per your requirements. For more information, see Define backup interval for SaaS Apps. Use the dropdown to select the backup frequency as Twice a Day, Thrice a Week, Twice a Week, or Once a Week. |
Retain daily data backups for |
Type the number of days that you want to retain all backups. At the end of the backup period, inSync will delete the data from the storage. For example, suppose you specify that you want to retain all backups for five days and inSync completed the backup operation on January 6, 2022. In that case, inSync will delete the backup data from the storage on January 11, 2022. Note: The backup and retention settings for groups are applicable only to the groups' metadata. Group site complies with the associated SharePoint Site settings. |
Retain weekly data backups for |
Type the number of weeks that you want to retain all backups. At the end of the weekly backup period, inSync deletes the data from the storage. Note: The weekly backup is the last backup in a calendar week. The calendar week starts on Sunday. Note: The backup and retention settings for groups are applicable only to the groups' metadata. Group site complies with the associated SharePoint Site settings. |
Retain monthly data backups for |
Type the number of months that you want to retain all backups. At the end of the monthly backup period, inSync deletes the data from the storage. Note: The monthly backup is the last backup in a calendar month. Note: The backup and retention settings for groups are applicable only to the groups' metadata. Group site complies with the associated SharePoint Site settings. |
Note: To retain the backups for an unlimited period, enter 0 as the value for all daily, weekly, and monthly retention settings.
Manual backup of Groups data
You can trigger an on-demand backup of Groups data when required.

Procedure

Sign in to inSync Management Console and navigate to Microsoft 365 > Groups.

Click the Group name you want to backup. The next steps depend on the backup configuration defined for the selected group.

If a Group is configured for backup, the Summary page is displayed showing Groups details. The Backup Now option is available on the Groups page for the backup-enabled groups.

If a Group is not configured for backup, the Configure Group Backup window is displayed.
The backup begins only after the storage is assigned. Select a storage from the Assign Storage list. When auto-configuration is enabled, storage is auto-assigned when you add a group. Update the backup and retention settings if required and click Save.

Select Use Default if you want inSync to automatically discover Groups. inSync runs the discovery process every 24 hours. This setting is enabled by default.
Select Custom if you want to schedule a specific backup and retention frequency.
Backup frequency
Select the frequency of backups for Groups. By default, it is once a day.
You can set the frequency as per your need.

Use the dropdown to select the backup frequency as Twice a Day, Thrice a Week, Twice a Week, or Once a Week.
Retain daily data backups for
Enter the number of days for which you want to retain all backups. At the end of the backup period, the data from the storage is deleted. If you specify 0, the backup will be retained forever.
For example, if you specify that you want to retain all backups for 5 days and inSync completed the backup operation on January 6, 2022, inSync will delete the backup data from the storage on January 11, 2022.
Note: The backup and retention settings for groups are applicable only to the groups metadata. Group Site complies with the associated SharePoint Site settings.
Retain weekly data backups for
Type the number of weeks for which you want to retain all backups. At the end of the weekly backup period, inSync deletes the data from the storage. If you specify 0, the backup will be retained forever.
Note: The weekly backup is the last backup in a calendar week. The calendar week starts on Sunday.
Retain monthly data backups for
Type the number of months for which you want to retain all backups. At the end of the monthly backup period, inSync deletes the data from the storage. If you specify 0, the backup will be retained forever.
Note: The monthly backup is the last backup in a calendar month.
Data Lock Note: Only Cloud Administrators can enable the Data Lock feature.
Enables the Data Lock feature. For more information, see Data Lock.
To enable the Data Lock feature, select the Enable Data Lock checkbox and on the confirmation window, click Yes. On the summary page, the Data Lock status is displayed as enabled. These details will be captured in the Admin Audit Trail for auditing purposes.
Note: Once you enable the Data Lock feature, you cannot:
- Delete the snapshots.
- Edit the retention period.
- Disable the Data Lock setting.

Go back to default settings.
The Backup Now option is disabled on the Groups page for the disabled groups.

On the Summary tab, click Backup Now to trigger the backup.
After the backup activity is completed, the Backup Status on the Groups page changes to Backed Up Successfully.
Note: Restoring a group as a mail-enabled security group is not supported. The Mail-enabled security groups and Distribution groups can be restored only as Microsoft 365 groups.
