Compliance Settings for Service Plan

Overview

This capability allows you to set compliance definitions for Workloads, Backup Frequency Limit, and Retention Limit per each service plan for different workloads of the following products:

  • Hybrid Workloads
  • Microsoft 365
  • Google Workspace
  • Endpoints

These defined limits when violated, relevant alerts are generated, and an email if subscribed is sent to the MSP administrators to notify them about the violations.

While creating a service plan, MSP administrators define compliance settings for the permitted Workloads, Backup Frequency Limit (Lower/Minimum and Upper/maximum), and Retention Limit (Lower/Minimum and Upper/maximum).

Note: The defined compliance settings are soft limits and hence will not have any impact on your existing backup jobs. However, we recommend that you reach out to MSP administrators to update these compliance limits as per your organization's needs.

During a customer creation, a service plan is assigned to the customer and all the rules assigned to that service plan automatically apply to that customer.

While editing a service plan and updating the Workload, Backup Frequency Limit (Lower/Minimum and Upper/maximum), and Retention Limit (Lower/Minimum and Upper/maximum), if the values provided do not adhere to the compliance limits set for that service plan the following alerts are generated, and an email is sent to notify the MSP administrators.

Let us use the example in the screenshot below to understand how compliance settings work and the alert types generated.

The compliance settings defined for the Gold service plan in the example are as follows:

Field Details
Workload Hybrid Workloads - NAS
Retention Limit

Min: 2 months

Max: 3 months

Backup Frequency Limit

Min: Once a week

Max: 3 times a week

Compliance settings

Non-Compliance - Workload

The workload value entered is violating the defined workload limit in the service plan.

In the above example, the service plan has only Hybrid Workloads - NAS as the defined workload. If a customer associated with this service plan tries to add and configure Oracle/VMware/any other workload, a Non-Compliance - Workload alert is generated.

Non-Compliance - Min Retention Limit

The min (lower) retention limit value entered is below the workload's total minimum retention compliance limit set in the service plan.

In the above example, for Hybrid Workloads -NAS, the minimum retention limit is set to 2 months in the service plan. When configuring retention limits, If you provide 1 month as the value for Hybrid Workload -NAS, a Non-Compliance - Min Retention Limit alert is generated.

Non-Compliance - Max Retention Limit

The max (upper) retention limit value entered is beyond the workload's total maximum retention compliance limit set in the service plan.

In the above example, for Hybrid Workloads, the maximum retention limit is set to 3 months in the service plan.  When configuring retention limits, If you provide 4 months as the value for Hybrid Workloads - NAS, a Non-Compliance - Max Retention Limit alert is generated.

Non-Compliance - Min Backup Frequency Limit

The min (lower) backup frequency limit value entered is below the workload's total minimum backup frequency compliance limit set in the service plan.

In the above example, for Hybrid Workloads - NAS, the minimum backup frequency limit is set to once a week in the service plan.  When configuring backup frequency limits, if you provide once a day as the value for Hybrid Workloads - NAS, a Non-Compliance - Min Backup Frequency Limit alert is generated.

Non-Compliance - Max Backup Frequency Limit

The max (upper) retention limit value entered is beyond the workload's total maximum backup frequency compliance limit set in the service plan.

In the above example, for Hybrid Workloads, the maximum backup frequency limit is set to 3 times a week in the service plan.  When configuring retention limits, If you provide 4 times a week as the value for Hybrid Workloads - NAS, a Non-Compliance - Max Backup Frequency Limit alert is generated.

Note: For Microsoft 365 - Public Folder, the retention limit set in the service plans is not honored and hence no non-compliance alert is generated for the Retention Limit for Public Folder workload.

You can resolve these compliance errors by any one of the following approaches:

  • While editing a service plan and updating the Workload, Backup Frequency Limit (Lower/Minimum and Upper/maximum), and Retention Limit (Lower/Minimum and Upper/maximum), ensure that you adhere to and enter values within the defined compliance settings for the associated service plan

  • Contact your MSP administrator to upgrade your service plan as per your organization’s needs

You can get a detailed view of all the unresolved active Non-Compliance alerts using the Compliance Report to take corrective actions.
