Configure EC2 instances for backup

Phoenix Editions: File:/tick.png Elite File:/cross.png EnterpriseFile:/tick.png Business

After you register an AWS account with Phoenix, Phoenix detects the EC2 instances that are running in your AWS account. You can select EC2 instances that you want to backup, and apply backup policies to the EC2 instances. You can either select EC2 instances and apply a backup policy to them or you can specify tags in the backup policy so that Phoenix can detect the EC2 instances with those tags and apply the backup policy to those instances.

A backup policy specifies the backup schedule of the backup jobs. Phoenix can create AMIs of the EC2 instances and store them in the region of the resource where it is running. In addition, Phoenix can store AMIs in the regions that you specify in the backup policy, and retain the AMIs based on the retention setting specified in the backup policy. Before you configure EC2 instances for backup, create backup policies that you want to use.

To create a backup policy

  1. Log in to the Phoenix Management Console.
  2. Select the organization from the top menu.
  3. Click Protect > AWS Resources on the top menu.
  4. On the AWS Resources page, click Backup Policies on the left pane.
  5. On the Backup Policies page, click Create Backup Policy.
  6. In the Create Backup Policy page that appears, provide the following information:

    Overview
    Field Description
Name Provide a name for the backup policy that you can use to quickly identify the settings in it.
Description Provide a description for the backup policy that describes the options selected in it.
Account Select an account in which you want to use the backup policy to configure workloads for backup.
Time Zone Select a time zone to accurately identify when the backup jobs run. By default, Phoenix uses the time zone of your browser.
    Schedule & Retention
    Field Description
Perform reboot Enable this setting to create an AMI after rebooting the EC2 instance for a consistent AMI creation.
Backup Schedule Choose the days and the time of the day when the backups run. If you choose 2:00 PM, backup job runs at 2:00 PM of the time zone you select.
Retention Specify the period for which you want to retain the AMI/snapshots in the customer's storage. You can choose to never delete the snapshot.
Enable Consistent AMIs Enable this setting if you want Phoenix to use a data lock to attempt the creation of a consistent AMI.
    Tags on created backups
Provide the key-value pairs that you can attach to the EC2 instance backups (AMIs/snapshots) for categorization and management.
    Field Description
Key Enter the tag key that you want to use. For more information, see Tagging your Amazon EC2 resources [External link to AWS documentation]
Value Enter the value of the tag. For more information, see Tagging your Amazon EC2 resources [External link to AWS documentation].
Inherit tags from source Enable this setting if you want the tags from the EC2 instance that serves as the source of the backup to be applied to the backup (AMI/snapshots) that is created after the backup job runs.
    Additional Copies
    Field Description
Select Region Choose an alternate region in the same account if you want Phoenix to store backups in an alternate region in the same account.
Select Account and Select Region Choose another account and a region in the other account if you want Phoenix to store backups in an alternate account. Ensure that the alternate account is registered with Phoenix.
Auto configuration on Resources with tags
Phoenix can automatically apply the backup policy to EC2 instances with the tags you enter in this section.
    Field Description
This policy will be automatically applied to the resources having
    <option>
    of the following tags.
You can choose to apply a backup policy to an EC2 instance that either has All the tags you provide here or an EC2 instance with Any of the tags.
Key Enter the tag key that you want to use. All EC2 instances that have this tag key applied will get configured for backup using this backup policy.
Value Enter the value of the tag.
  7. Click Save.

To configure EC2 instances for backup

  1. Log in to the Phoenix Management Console.
  2. Select the organization from the top menu.
  3. Click Protect > AWS Resources on the top menu.
  4. On the AWS Resources page, select an account from the left pane.
  5. In the left pane, select Resources > Compute & Storage.
The right pane lists the EC2 instances running in your account. If the resource name is not available for an EC2 instance, the EC2 instance is listed with its ID.
  6. Select the EC2 instances and then click Configure for Backup.
  7. In the Configure for Backup dialog that appears, provide the following:
    • Apply Backup Policy(s): Phoenix lists the backup policies you can apply to the EC2 instance. Only the backup policies that are created for the selected account are listed. You can choose multiple backup policies for an EC2 instance. Backups (AMIs) for an EC2 instance are created and managed using the policies that you apply.
  8. Click Save.

The EC2 instances are now configured for backup.
