Protect files and folders on servers in Druva Direct to Cold storage tier

About Druva Direct to Cold storage tier  

The Druva Direct to Cold is an ultra-low-cost storage tier focused on reducing storage cost for large files that are infrequently accessed and restored. It helps you protect such data for future reference and compliance purposes. 

Unlike Druva Phoenix Warm tier, this tier is not meant for application recovery and business continuity.  This tier allows you to backup directly to cold storage, bypassing the warm storage tier. As such, it is designed for large files that are rarely accessed or restored, for example, large engineering files, images, and so on. 

When you backup data to Druva Direct to Cold storage tier the data is moved to the cold tier on day 1.

Qualify data to be backed up to Druva Direct to Cold storage tier  

Consider the following aspects to decide the data you can protect in the Direct to Cold storage tier.  Choose to protect:  

  • Large files ( larger than 2MB). For example,  Media, Medical Imaging, Engineering Designs, CCTV Footage, DB dumps, etc.
  • Data that needs to be retained for more than one year. 
  • Data that is not RPO intensive and has a relaxed RPO SLA. Typically data with a backup frequency of once a day (24 hours) or week. 
  • Data that is rarely needed, wherein, the data is rarely accessed or restored.  
  • Data that has relaxed RTO i.e. 5  hours retrieval time.

Calculation of credit consumption  

The formula to calculate the total number of credits consumed for a backup set is as follows:

Credit Consumption (in Credits) = (Deduped backup set data size) *0.5* (Credit consumption rate per TB per month)* (number of months the data is retained for)

Note: If the number files are more than 5 million, there is an additional cost of 1 credit per million.

With the Direct to Cold storage tier, you can achieve up to a 50% reduction in storage costs vs. warm tier.

Back up files and folders on servers to Direct to Cold storage tier 

Create a new backup set with prefix  IA_ and suffix _IA and trigger a manual backup.

Note:  Ensure that  LTR setting is turned off. Direct to cold tier and LTR tier cannot be used simultaneously on the same backup set.

  1.  Log in to the Phoenix management console.
  2. Select the Organization.
  3.  On the menu, click Protect > Windows/Linux Servers.
  4.   In the left navigation, click Registers Servers. Select the required servers and click Create File Backup Set.
  5. Create the new backup set with prefix  IA_ and suffix _IA. For more information, see Configure registered servers for backup.
    When you specify Backup Content, select the Specify Custom content option. Specify the folders and files that must be excluded from or included in the backups for infrequent access.
  6. In the left navigation click Backup Sets. Select the newly created backup set with prefix  IA_ and suffix _IA and click Backup Now.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between LTR and Direct to Cold?

LTR  is a low-cost storage tier that reduces the cost of aging backup copies retained for long-term compliance and regulatory purposes. Data is written to warm storage and then automatically tiers to Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive (GDA) as it ages.

Direct to Cold is an ultra-low-cost storage tier for large files protected for future reference and compliance purposes. This data is rarely accessed or restored. The data is backed up directly to cold storage, bypassing a warm storage tier. The files need to be at least 2MB in size.

In both instances, these tiers only apply to data kept for more than a year.

Can I place an unlimited amount of data in the Direct to Cold tier?
