VMware backup fails with the VMWARE VMOMI65535 error: File is larger than the maximum size supported by datastore

 

Problem description

The snapshot creation fails for virtual machines with the VMDK size larger than 2 TB. This issue occurs for VMware ESXi with a version prior to 5.5.

Resolution

You can install the Phoenix File server agent to back up this virtual machine. For more information, see Install the agent and register a server.

Note

  • This is a limitation from VMware for ESXi prior to version 5.5.

  • In VMware ESXi 5.5, there is supportability for virtual machine disks (VMDKs) larger than 2 TB.
