Restoring a Hyper-V Full VM to a different host fails

Heads up!

We've transitioned to a new documentation portal to serve you better. Access the latest content by clicking here.

Problem description

Restoring a Hyper-V virtual machine to a different host fails with the Memory virtual quantity above maximum (Error code 11) error.

Cause

This issue is observed when the target host does not support the number of CPUs or the amount of memory assigned to the original VM.

Resolution

While the Full VM restore fails, the Hyper-V virtual machines disks are successfully restored. Therefore, to restore the VM:

  1. Perform a disk restore
  2. Create a new virtual machine in the Hyper-V manager
  3. Attach the restored disk(s) to the new VM
