Manage Recommendations

File Analytics & Recommendations, which provide post-backup metadata-based insights for the NAS & File Server workloads, will deprecate by the end of June 2023.

 Overview

We strongly believe Recommendations are thoughtfully designed and provide you the required insights into your data and the benefit of removing it from protection. However, sometimes it can become overwhelming and hence we provide you the option to manage and ignore Recommendations.

This topic lists all the actions that a Druva Cloud Administrator can take to manage and ignore Recommendations.

Modify Rule to receive Recommendations

Recommendations are generated based on the Recommendations Rule (Rule). The default Rule, is defined by Druva based on the type of data under the protection and study of various data protection patterns. However, the non-critical files and their extensions defined in the default Rule, may not be useful for all the organizations.

As an administrator you have the choice to modify the default Rule based on your company data protection policies. After the Rule is updated, Druva sends you the updated recommendations starting the next cycle of generating recommendations for all the backup sets.

The Rule defines the following settings based on which recommendations are generated -

  • Percentage of total storage -  Recommendations are generated for backup sets when the total percentage of non-critical files grow beyond the defined threshold (in percentage) of total consumed storage.

Example - If the defined threshold is 5 %, and assuming you have 50 GB of consumed storage, recommendations are generated if the non-critical files grow beyond 2.5 GB i.e. more than 5% of 50 GB.

  • Storage growth over 30 days - Recommendations are generated for backup sets if the total percentage of non-critical files has grown beyond the defined threshold (in percentage) in the last 30 days.

Example - If the defined threshold is 5%, and assuming you have 100 GB of consumed storage, recommendations are generated if non-critical files grow more than 5 GB, i.e. 5% growth over 100 GB in the last 30 days.

  • File Type - Lists the file types that Druva considers as Non-Critical files and generates recommendations when one of the above conditions is met. For the complete list of File Types, see Frequently Asked Questions.
  • File Extensions - Lists the file extensions for the selected File Types. For the complete list of File Types, see Frequently Asked Questions.

Procedure

To modify the Rule,

  1. On the Recommendations home page, one the left-hand side panel, click Settings.
  2. In the Recommendation Rule  area, click Edit.

  3. On the Edit Recommendation Rule dialog box, define the following -
    1. Percentage of total storage - Define the threshold (in percentage) for availability of non-critical files of your total storage after which recommendations should be generated.
    2. Storage growth over 30 days - Define the threshold (in percentage) for growth of non-critical files in the last 30 days after which recommendations should be generated.
    3. File Types - Define the file types that you consider as non-critical so as to ensure recommendations are generated only for only the availability of selected file types when they combine cross the defined threshold.
    4. File Extensions - Displays the file extensions, based on the selection of File Types, that are termed as non-critical.
Note - You cannot modify the File Extensions.

Recommendations are generated based on the updated Rule starting next cycle of Recommendation Engine within 24 hours.

Ignore Recommendations

You can choose to ignore recommendations for particular backup sets if you think that the recommendations generated are currently not required, or you believe that the data under protection for those backup sets including content rule policies and backup settings are optimally configured as per your requirement.

Before ignoring, we advise you to consider modifying the Recommendation Rule to customize recommendations and save costs by removing non-critical files. See Modify Rule to receive Recommendations.

You can choose to ignore recommendations for such backup sets temporarily for a period of 30 days or permanently.

In case, you again want to start receiving recommendations for the ignored backup sets, you can enable it again anytime later.
