Set bandwidth for device backups

License editions: To understand the applicable license editions, see Plans & Pricing.

Overview

During backups or syncs, data is transferred from the devices to the inSync storage. These data transfers consume bandwidth. As an administrator, you can limit the bandwidth consumed for backing up data. This ensures that all applications on the user’s device get a fair share of the available network bandwidth even during backups. A lower bandwidth can result in prolonged backups. You can limit bandwidth either as a percentage of the available bandwidth or in absolute terms. If you limit bandwidth in percentage terms, inSync will calculate the bandwidth available to it before starting the backup and then utilize the configured percentage of it.

Note: You can set network bandwidth for inSync through profiles. You cannot do this on an individual user level.

Points to consider:

  • The bandwidth limitation is for each inSync Client on the user device and not for inSync Master as a whole.
  • We recommend using percentage values instead of setting limitations in absolute terms. For example, instead of limiting the bandwidth to 256 kbps, set the limit as 40% of the available bandwidth. This ensures fair distribution even while there are fluctuations in the available bandwidth.
  • Before the first backup from all devices are complete, keep 80% as the maximum bandwidth consumption limit. Once the first backups are complete, you can reduce the bandwidth to 40%. The first backup is a complete backup and transfers large amount of data. Subsequent backups transfer only the incremental data.

Procedure

To limit the network bandwidth consumption during backup

  1. On the Endpoints console, click Profiles.
  2. Select the profile for which you want to configure folders for backup.
  3. Go to the Edit option at the top right, and click the Endpoints tab from the dropdown. The Edit Profile window appears.
  4. Under the Backup Schedule & Retentions tab, go to the Resource Settings area.
  5. In the Max Bandwidth [WAN], set the maximum network bandwidth (in Kbs/Mbs or percentage )that the user devices can consume while backing up data over WAN. If you do not want to set any restriction on bandwidth consumption, type 0 (zero).
  6. Click Save
