Key terms and terminologies

Overview

Druva inSync design fosters an intuitive experience for administrators to better manage and deploy Druva inSync on user devices, perform backups, restore data to end-user devices as and when required, and furthermore enables you to monitor for non-compliance. 

As an inSync administrator, you can perform these activities and various configurations from the inSync Management Console.

Let us take a look at some of the key terminologies that you shall see on the inSync Management Console and some insights of it.

Field Description

inSync Cloud

Storage space utilized by Druva in AWS Cloud to enable organizations to protect their employees' data securely with high availability.

inSync Client

An agent or software that is installed on the end-user device like a laptop or mobile and enables inSync to perform scheduled backups and enables the end-users to restore the data on the device when required.

Note - If you want to protect a SaaS workloads supported by Druva, you are not required to install any agent or software.

inSync Mobile app

inSync mobile application that is installed on the end-users mobile or tablet devices and enables inSync to backup and restore the data on their device.

inSync Administrators

The different administrator role/accounts that you can create from the inSync Management Console  for handling different responsibilities on the inSync Management Console and end-users devices:

  • Druva Cloud Administrator
  • Cloud Administrator 
  • Data Protection Officer
  • Help Desk Administrator
  • Legal Administrator
  • Profile Administrator
  • inSync Compliance Administrator
  • View Only Administrator

The Druva Cloud Administrator role is available only in Druva Cloud Platform Console

inSync User

The employee whose device or Cloud App account is configured for backup in inSync.

inSync Management Console

A unified interface that is intended for the inSync administrators to access inSync Cloud, configure inSync, and perform various activities related to managing users (their employees) and their devices.

inSync Web

A console that is intended for the inSync end-users that can be accessed over the web when the end-users do not have access to their configured device and enables them to access their backed up data with the option to download it based on organization policy.

inSync Connector

inSync Connector or AD/LDAP Connector is a software application that needs to be installed on a Windows device or a server within your organization network.

inSync Connector is required in the following scenarios -

  • You want to use Active Directory (AD) or Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) for importing and managing new users in Druva inSync.

  • You want to protect SaaS Application like Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace apps data of your users and you do NOT have -

    •  A user endpoint device (desktop or laptop) configured for backup in Druva inSync.

    • Enabled the Configure Key Management for Cloud Apps.

inSync CloudCache Server

inSync CloudCache Server is a dedicated server that temporarily stores back up and restores data from inSync Clients, and then periodically syncs data to inSync Cloud. 

You can use inSync CloudCache Server if any of the following scenarios are applicable to your organization: 

  • You or your users are backing up a large volume of initial data.

  • You are planning large data transfer events, for example, device refreshes or OS migrations.

  • You want to accelerate or optimize backups and restore operations.

  • You want to optimize your WAN bandwidth consumption. Administrators can schedule sync operations from theinSync CloudCache Server to inSync Cloud during off-peak hours.

Storage or Storage region

The AWS region where the backed up data from the configured data sources stored securely.

Profile

An entity that is associated with every user configured for backup in inSync. A profile defines the backup settings such as -

  • The user content to be backed up

  • The schedule for automatic backup

  • And numerous other configurations that you can define for data backup based on your organization's policy

Active user

A user whose data is being actively backed up and under protection.

Preserved user

A user whose data is no longer being backed up, but protected data remains secured within inSync until the user account is auto-deleted.

User on Legal Hold

A user who cannot be deleted or the data under protection cannot be deleted.

Cloud Key Management System (KMS)

The Cloud Key Management feature is a secured method to backup the SaaS Application data and is an alternative method to the inSync AD/LDAP Connector based deployment.
