Encrypt inSync Share folder for Windows laptops

Overview

As an administrator, you can enable encryption for the inSync Share folder on Windows laptops. Files that are encrypted appear in green whereas files that are not encrypted appear in black.

The following table lists various inSync Share folder encryption scenarios and their results.

Scenario Result
inSync administrator enables encryption for the inSync Share folder
  • inSync encrypts files in the inSync Share folder.
  • inSync does not encrypt folders within the inSync Share folder.
  • inSync encrypts new files that users add to the inSync Share folder.
  • Encryption is user-specific and not folder-specific. 
  • If users change the location of the inSync Share folder, inSync encrypts files at the new location.
  • If users encrypt the inSync Share folder, then encryption from inSync supersedes user encryption.
inSync administrator disables encryption for the inSync Share folder
  • inSync does not encrypt files in the inSync Share folder.
  • If required, users can encrypt the inSync Share folder on their laptops.
User adds collaborators to the inSync Share folder
  • User A is associated with a profile for which inSync Share folder encryption is disabled and user B is associated with a profile for which inSync Share folder encryption is enabled

    When User A collaborates with user B, during the sync operation on user B's devices, inSync will encrypt all files in the synced folder.
     
  • User C is associated with a profile for which inSync Share folder encryption is enabled and user D is associated with a profile for which inSync Share folder encryption is disabled.

    When user C collaborates with user D, during the sync operation on user D’s devices, inSync will decrypt all files in the synced folder.
Note: You can encrypt the inSync Share folder for users through profiles. You cannot do this on an individual user level.

Before you begin

Before you enable encryption for the inSync Share folder, ensure that the Windows edition that your organization uses supports Encrypting File System (EFS).

Procedure

To encrypt the inSync Share folder

  1. On the inSync Master Management Console menu bar, click Manage > Profiles.
  2. Click the link of the profile for which you want to enable encryption.
  3. Click the DLP tab.
  4. Click Edit. The Edit Profile window appears.
  5. Select the Encrypt inSync share folder check box.
  6. Click Save.
