Pause and resume a backup operation

Overview

If your administrator provides you with the required permissions, you can pause a backup several times.

Note: The inSync Client automatically restarts backup operations when you restart the service on your laptop.

Pause and resume backup scenarios

Scenario: User pauses an ongoing backup

The following table lists the interval that you can configure to pause an ongoing backup and its impact after the pause interval is complete.

User pauses backup for... Impact on inSync backups
2 hours

Scenario: The user pauses the backup at 10:00 A.M.

Result: The inSync Client pauses the backup for two hours and resumes the backup at 12:00 P.M.

4 hours

Scenario: The user pauses the backup at 10:00 A.M.

Result: The inSync Client pauses the backup for 4 hours and resumes the backup at 02:00 P.M.
8 hours

Scenario: The user pauses the backup at 10:00 A.M.

Result: The inSync Client pauses the backup for 8 hours and resumes the backup at 06:00 P.M.

12 hours

Scenario: The user pauses the backup at 10:00 A.M.

Result: The inSync Client pauses the backup for 12 hours and resumes the backup at 10:00 P.M.

Pause a backup operation

You can pause an ongoing backup operation in either of the following ways:

  • Pause backup from the system tray of your laptop
  • Pause backup from inSync Client.

From the system tray of your laptop, right-click the inSync icon TrayIconBackupOngoing.png to pause the backup operation.

Pause backup from inSync Client

To pause a backup operation

  1. Start the inSync Client.
  2. In the navigation pane, select Backup & Restore.
  3. In the right pane, click Pause pause icon.png . The backup operation will be paused for the duration specified.

    The default pause duration is four hours, however, you can configure the inSync Client to resume after an interval of two, four, eight or 12 hours or at the next scheduled backup. For more information, see Pause and resume a backup operation section.

Set pause duration

To set pause duration

  1. Start the inSync Client.
  2. On the Settings page, under the General tab, select the required Pause Duration.

  3. Click the appropriate option.
    Field Action
    Pause for 2 hours If you want the inSync Client to resume backup after two hours, in the list, click Pause for 2 hours.
    Pause for 4 hours If you want the inSync Client to resume backup after four hours, in the list, click Pause for 4 hours.
    Pause for 8 hours If you want the inSync Client to resume backup after eight hours, in the list, click Pause for 8 hours.
    Pause for 12 hours If you want the inSync Client to resume backup after 12 hours, in the list, click Pause for 12 hours.

Resume a backup

You can resume a backup in either of the following ways:

  • Resume backup from the system tray of your laptop
  • Resume backup from inSync Client

From the system tray of your laptop, right-click the inSync icon TrayIconBackupPause.png to pause the backup operation.

Resume backup from inSync Client

To resume a backup

  1. Start the inSync Client.
  2. Select the Backup & Restore tab, and in the right pane, click Resume resume icon.png.

  3. If you resume a backup that the inSync Client paused because of your laptop battery percentage level, a window appears that prompts you whether you want to proceed. Click Yes.
