Pause and resume a backup operation

Overview

If your inSync administrator provides you with the required permissions, you can pause a backup. You can configure the inSync client to resume after an hour, a day, or at the next scheduled backup.

Note: The inSync client automatically restarts backup operations when you restart the inSync service on your laptop.

Pause and resume backup scenarios

Scenario 1: User pauses an ongoing backup

The following table lists the interval that you can configure to pause an ongoing backup and its impact after the pause interval is complete.

User pauses backup for... Impact on inSync backups
An hour

Scenario: The backup interval is set to 8 hours. The user pauses the backup at 10:00 A.M.

Result: The inSync client pauses the backup for an hour and resumes the backup at 11:00 A.M.

For today

Scenario: The backup interval is set to 8 hours. The user pauses the backup at 10:00 A.M.

Result: The inSync client pauses the backup for 12 hours and resumes the backup at 10:00 P.M.
Until next scheduled backup

Scenario: The backup interval is set to 8 hours. The user pauses the backup at 10:00 A.M.

Result: The inSync client pauses the backup for 8 hours, which is the backup interval configured, and resumes the backup at 6:00 P.M.

Note: If the frequency of the scheduled backups is less than an hour, the inSync client still pauses for an hour and then resumes the backup. For example, if you set the backup interval for 30 minutes, the inSync client pauses the backup for an hour and then resumes the backup at 11:00 A.M.

Scenario 2: User clicks pause backup when the inSync client is not running a backup

The following table lists the interval that you can configure to pause a backup when the inSync client is not running a backup and its impact after the pause interval is complete.

User pauses backup for... Impact on inSync backups
An hour

Scenario: The backup interval is set to 8 hours. The inSync client has completed the backup at 10:30 A.M., and the user pauses the backup at 11 A.M., when the backup is not running.

Result: No impact because the next scheduled backup is after 8 hours.

For today

Scenario: The backup interval is set to 8 hours. The inSync client has completed the backup at 10:30 A.M., and the user pauses the backup at 11 A.M., when the backup is not running.

Result: The inSync client pauses the backup for 12 hours and resumes the backup at 11:00 P.M.

Until next scheduled backup

Scenario: The backup interval is set to 8 hours. The inSync client has completed the backup at 10:30 A.M., and the user pauses the backup at 11 A.M., when the backup is not running.

Result: The inSync client pauses the backup for 8 hours, which is the backup interval configured, and then resumes the backup at 6:00 P.M.

Note: If the frequency of the scheduled backups is less than an hour, the inSync client still pauses for an hour and then resumes backup. For example, if you set the backup interval for 30 minutes, the inSync client pauses the backup for an hour and then resumes the backup at 12:00 P.M.
