This topic explains what profiles are and how to create them.
A profile is a collection of configuration settings that apply to all users assigned to that profile. Profiles help group and manage users. Any change applied to a profile is immediately applied across users assigned to the profile.
Configuring inSync for individual users can be time consuming, especially if a large number of users are backed up. By creating separate profiles that capture similar requirements of groups of users, and then assigning the appropriate profile to users, you can minimize your efforts in managing changes.
Some of the properties that you can manage through profiles are:
| || || |
Creating a profile using the profile creation wizard
Before you begin: When you create a profile, you can specify the storages to which data from users assigned to that profile will be backed up. Make sure that you created those storages.
To create a profile
- From the menu bar, select Manage > Profiles.
- Click Create New Profile. The Create New Profile wizard appears.
- Enter the relevant details. For more information about fields that appear on the wizard, see Fields in the profile creation wizard.
- Click Finish.
Creating a profile from an existing profile
If you intend to create a profile that is similar to an existing profile, you can create a copy of the existing profile, and then modify this newly-created profile.
To create a copy of an existing profile
- From the menu bar, select Manage > Profiles.
- Select the profile that you want to copy.
- Click Copy. The Copy Profile window appears.
- Enter a name and description of the new profile.
- Click Copy.
A copy of the selected profile is created. You must now modify the required properties to create the desired profile.
Fields in the profile creation wizard
The fields on the Summary page are as follows:
|Profile name||Enter a name for the profile.|
|Max. number of users||Enter the maximum number of users that can be assigned to the profile. If you do not want any restrictions on the number of users, enter 0 (zero).|
|Quota per user|| |
Enter the maximum data that any user assigned to the profile can back up or share. If you do not want any restriction on the amount of data the user can back up or share, enter 0 (zero)
Note: Only the data in the backup and share folders of the user devices is used to determine if the user has exceeded quota. If the size of files in the backup and share folders exceed the assigned quota, backups and share from user devices will fail.
|Allow users to add laptops|| |
Select if you want to allow users to activate inSync client on their laptops. If not selected, you will have to activate inSync client on behalf of the users.
Note: The restriction through this field is only applicable for inSync client installed on user computers. The restriction is not applicable for inSync companion app on user's smartphones or tablets. Only the user can activate inSync companion app.
|Max. laptops per user|| |
This field appears only when you select Allow users to add laptops. Enter the total number of computers that each user can backup using inSync. This includes laptops and desktops.
Note: You can control the ability of users to backup their mobile devices (refer to Mobile Access & Backup). However, you cannot control the number of mobile devices the user can install the companion app on.

|Backup between||Enter the time period during between which scheduled backups will be triggered from user devices every day. Any backup triggered during this period will continue till completion, even if it is past the end time. If you do not want any restriction on triggering a scheduled backup, make the start time and end time identical. |
Note: inSync follows the server's time zone for the Backup between time period. For example, if the server is in New York (EDT) and the Backup between time is set to start at 8:00 AM, backups will start from 5:00 AM for user devices in Los Angeles (PDT).
|Never backup between|| |
Enter the time period during which ongoing scheduled backups will be stopped and new backups will not be triggered. If you do not want any such restriction, make the start time and end time identical. The restriction does not aply to user-triggered backups.
Note: inSync follows the server's time zone for the Never backup between time period. For example, if the server is in New York (EDT) and the Never backup between time is set to start at 8:00 PM, scheduled backup will be stopped at 5:00 PM for user devices in Los Angeles (PDT)
