Configuring folders from quick list for backup

Adding folders from the quick list

As users belonging to a profile may use a Windows, Mac, or Linux laptop, inSync provides a quick list of folders for each OS. Unless all users associated with the profile use laptops with a specific OS, it is recommended that you configure folders from all three lists. This functionality is managed through profiles and not at an individual user level.

Note: The procedure describes adding a quick list folder for Windows OS. The steps are also applicable for Mac and Linux OS.

Using filters when configuring folders for backup

inSync provides four types of filters that help you include or exclude files or file types during backup.

Filter Description
Global Exclude list

This is the master exclude list. Any file or file type included in this list will always be excluded from backup, irrespective of the filters set at folder-level. For example, you may not want any .exe files to be backed up from user devices. You must add .exe in the global exclude list.

Include Files

This is a folder-level include list. The files and file types included in this list are always backed up from that folder unless they are part of the global exclude list. 

Exclude Files

This is a folder-level exclude list. The files and file types included in this list are never backed up from that folder.

Exclude Path

The paths included in this list are not backed up. For example, you may not have any advantage by backing up folders such as System Volume Information, Program Files (x86), $Recycle.Bin, Temp, and so on. If you do not then make sure, you include these file paths in the exclude path list.


To add a folder from the quick list for Windows OS

  1. On the menu bar, click Manage > Profiles.
  2. Click the profile that you want to modify.
  3. Under the Laptop Backup Content tab, click Edit. The Edit Profile window appears.
  4. Click the tab corresponding to the operating system of the user laptops. For example, if you want to configure backup folders for the Windows laptops of users, click the Windows tab.
  5. Select one of the folders from the quick list. Additional fields appear.


  6. If you expect the folder to contain more than 10,000 file, select Optimize data scans for large folders.
  7. Select the files within this folder that you want to back up:
    • In the Include Files field, select the files types that you want to back up. Common file extensions for the selected file types are automatically added in the adjacent text box. You can manually include more file types or delete the predefined file types. 
    • In the Exclude Files field, select the file types that you DO NOT want to back up.
    • In the Exclude Path field, type the path to the subfolder, within the selected folder, that you do not want to backup. All contents from the subfolder will be excluded from backup.
  8. Click Save.
Note: Separate the entries in the text boxes using a semicolon (;). Make sure that there is no white space between two consecutive entries.
