Restoring data backed up from user devices

Overview

This topic contains instructions on how to restore data on user devices, on inSync server, and how to stop data restores in progress.

About data restore

inSync allows users to restore their data that has been backed up on inSync. As an administrator, you too can restore data backed up from user devices. You can restore data to the following locations:

  • The user's device. If the user has multiple devices, you can choose on which device you want to restore the data. You can also choose the location on the device where you want to restore the data.
  • The inSync server.

Restoring data on user devices

To restore data on a user's device

  1. On the menu bar, select Manage > Users.
  2. Click the user whose data you want to restore.
  3. Click Restore > Restore Backup Data. The Restore Data window appears.

  4. Select the device and the snapshot from which you want to restore data.
  5. Select the file or folder that you want to restore and click Restore to Device. The Restore to Device window appears.

  6. Select the device and the location where you want to restore the data.
    • Selecting Desktop will restore the data to the device's desktop. 
    • Selecting Original Location will restore the data to the folder from which it was backed up. This option is available only when you are restoring data to the device from which it was backed up.
    • Selecting Custom Location will restore the data in the path specified in the Specify custom location field.
  7. Click OK.

Restoring data on inSync server

To restore data on inSync server

  1. On the menu bar, select Manage > Users
  2. Click the user whose data you want to restore.
  3. Click Restore > Restore Backup Data. The Restore Data window appears.
  4. Select the device and the snapshot from which you want to restore data. 
  5. Select the file or folder that you want to restore and click Restore to Server. The Restore to Server window appears.

  6. Type the path or browse to the folder on the server where you want to restore the selected data. 
  7. If you want to save the data as a zip file select Restore to ZIP file and then enter the name and password for the zip file.
  8. Click OK.

The selected data is downloaded to the specified folder on inSync server. You must log on to the inSync server to access the data.

Stopping a restore in progress

To stop a backup that is in progress

  1. On the menu bar, click Reporting > Live Activities.
  2. Select the restore that you want to stop.
  3. Click Cancel.

Status of file metadata after restore

inSync restores the following metadata about the files when they are restored to their original location.

Windows Linux Mac
  • Access control list
  • Modified and access timestamps
  • Permissions: UGO, RWX
  • Modified and access timestamps
  • HFS+ extended attributes (i.e. xattr)
  • POSIX permissions
  • Modified and access timestamps

If a file is restored to a custom location, none of the metadata (except HFS+ extended attributes for Mac) are restored.
