Restoring data to a device

About restoring data on user devices

As an inSync administrator, you can restore backed up data to a user's device. If the user has multiple devices, you can choose the device on which you want to restore data. You can restore user's data to the following locations on the user's device:

  • The desktop of the user's device.
  • The original location from which data was backed up. This is applicable only if you are restoring data to the same device from which it was backed up.
  • A custom location of your choice.

Procedure

To restore data on a user's device

  1. On the menu bar, select Manage > Users.
  2. Click the user whose data you want to restore.
  3. Click one of the following:
    • To restore data from the primary storage, click Restore > Restore Backup Data From Primary.
    • To restore data from the secondary storage, click Restore > Restore Backup Data From Secondary.

    The Restore Data window appears.

  4. Select the device and the snapshot from which you want to restore data.
  5. Select the file or folder that you want to restore and click Restore to Device. The Restore to Device window appears.

  6. Select the device and the location where you want to restore the data.
    • Select Desktop to restore the data to the device's desktop. 
    • Select Original Location to restore the data to the folder from which it was backed up. This option is available only when you are restoring data to the device from which it was backed up.
    • Select Custom Location to restore data in the path specified in the Specify custom location field.
  7. Click OK.

Status of file metadata after restore

inSync restores the following metadata about the files when they are restored to their original location.

  • Access control list
  • Modified and access timestamps
  • Permissions: UGO, RWX
  • Modified and access timestamps
  • HFS+ extended attributes (i.e. xattr)
  • POSIX permissions
  • Modified and access timestamps

inSync restores the following metadata about the files when they are restored to custom locations.
