Configuring an edge server for a storage node

Configuration Process

When you install the master server, a storage node (called local storage node) is also installed on the same server. The local storage node always uses the edge server configured for the master server. For all other storage nodes, you can configure an edge server.

By configuring an edge server for a storage node, you ensure that all requests to the storage node from the inSync client's outside the organization's firewall are directed through the edge server. The following table describes the multi-step configuration process.

Step Description
Step 1

If required, install the edge server. All storage nodes and master server within the same firewall can use the same edge server. So, if the storage node is on the same network as the master server, or if it is on a network where an edge server is installed, you do not need to install the edge server.

For instruction, see Installing an edge server.

Step 2 Log on to the computer where you installed the edge server and generate an edge server registration key. For instructions, see Generating edge server registration key.
Step 3 Log on to the computer where the storage node is installed and register the edge server on the storage node. For instructions, see Registering the edge server with a storage node.
Step 4 Log on to inSync Admin Console and enter the storage node registration details. For instructions, see Registering the edge server on the inSync Admin Console.

Generating the edge server registration key

The edge server registration key acts as a unique identifier for the edge server and secures the interactions between the edge server and the Master server.

For Windows

To generate the edge server registration key

  1. Log on to the computer where you have installed the edge server.
  2. On the Start menu, click All Programs > Druva inSync Edge Server > Druva inSync Edge Server.

The following information about the edge server is displayed:

  • IP address of the edge server
  • Port number used for communication with the edge server
  • Registration key of the edge server

Copy the edge server registration key.

For Linux

To generate the edge server registration key

  1. Log on to the computer where you have installed the edge server.
  2. On the terminal, run the following command:
    sudo insync-edgeserver-config.sh -k

The registration key of the edge server is displayed. Copy the edge server registration key.

Registering the edge server with a storage node

To register the edge server for a storage node, follow the procedure relevant to the OS of the computer where the storage node is installed.

For Windows

To register the edge server for a storage node

  1. Log on to the computer where you installed the storage node.
  2. Click Start > All Programs > Druva inSync Storage Node > Druva inSync Storage Node.
  3. Click Advanced Options.
  4. Enter the following details:
    • Enable Edge Server: Select the checkbox.
    • IP Address/FQDN: Enter the IP address or the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the edge server.
    • Backup and sync port: The port used by inSync clients for communicating with the edge server. The default port is 6061.
    • Registration Key: Enter the edge server registration key.
  5. Click Save.

For Linux

To register the edge server for a storage node

  1. Log on to the computer where you installed the storage node.
  2. Run the following command:
    sudo insync-storagenode-config.sh -e

  3. When prompted, enter the following details:
    • Hostname for the edge server: Enter the IP address or the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the edge server.
    • Port for edge server: The port used by inSync clients for communicating with the edge server. The default port is 6061.
    • Secret key for edge server: Enter the edge server registration key.
  4. Click Save.

Registering the edge server on the inSync Admin Console

If you are yet to register the storage node on the Master server, the edge server can be registered along with the storage node. On the wizard for registering the storage node, you will be asked to provide the edge server IP address/FQDN and the port number.

If you have already registered the storage node, you can modify the storage node registration details and include the details for the edge server.

To include edge server details in the storage node settings

  1. On the inSync Admin Console menu bar, click Manage > Storage.
  2. Under the Storage Nodes tab, click the storage node to which you want to configure the edge server.
  3. Under Advanced Options, click Edit.
  4. On the Edit Storage Node window, enter the following details:
    • Enable Edge Server: Select the checkbox.
    • Edge Server IP (or) FQDN: Enter the IP address or FQDN of the edge server.
    • Edge Server Port: Enter the port number of the edge server. By default, port 6061 is used.
  5. Click Save.
