How to restore G Suite data?

Overview

An inSync cloud administrator can restore the user data that is backed up from Google Drive.

You can restore the data backed up from Google Drive to a user's device. If the user has multiple devices, you can choose the device on which you want to restore the Google Drive data. However, you cannot restore G Suite data to a mobile device, or restore another endpoint's data to a Google Drive account. 

You can restore Google Drive data to the following locations on the user's device:

  • On the user's desktop
  • On a custom location of your choice

For restore, you can use Search to easily find files and emails and then restore them. 

Procedure

To restore Google Drive data:

  1. On the inSync Master Management Console menu bar, click Availability > Restore. The Restore Overview page appears.
  2. Under the All Users tab, from the All Users list, select the user whose data you want to restore.
  3. Click Restore. The Restore Data window appears.
  4. Click Google Drive and then select the snapshot from which you want to restore. Alternatively, you can use Search to search for files that you want to restore. 

  5. Select the files or folders that you want to restore, and click Restore to Device

    Note: You cannot restore files with the same names simultaneously.

  6. On the Restore to Device window, provide details on the following:
    Field Action
    Restore to device Select the device where you want to restore the Google Drive data.
    Restore to Location

    If you want to restore the Google Drive data to a desktop, click Desktop

    If you want to restore the Google Drive data to a custom location, click Custom Location.

    Specify custom location

    If you want to restore data to a custom location, enter the location in the Specify custom location box.

  7. Click OK.

After the restore operation is completed, you can click View Details to view the restore details, such as, the state of restore, number of files restored, and the number of files missed.

Procedure

To restore mails, contacts and calendar to G Suite

Restoring Gmail data like mails, contact and calendar, is beneficial to an organization in case an employee is leaving or transferring roles. It ensures restored mails, contacts or calendar events are available for future reference and for business continuity. Restored mails, contacts and calendar events can be retrieved in case of accidental deletion or malicious activities.

To restore Mails 

  1. On the inSync Master Management Console menu bar, click Users.
  2. Click the username of the user whose data you want to restore. Click Restore Backup Data.
  3. On the Restore Data window, under Device select Gmail to view its snapshots and backed up data. 
  4. Select Mails and click Restore.
  5. On the Restore window, provide details on the following:
    Field Action
    Time Period From the drop-down list, select the date range since when you want to restore the emails. Select Custom to specify a particular date range.
    Restore to From the drop-down list, select the restore location. You can restore the emails to the either original user's account or to a different user's account.
    Select user This field is displayed only if you choose to restore the emails to a different user's account. Enter the required user's name.
  6. Click Ok.

Note: During the restore activity a new label is created inside the user's inbox with a date stamp for the restore. This label will contain all the restore mails. You can then move the restored emails to the desired location in the inbox.

To restore individual emails 

  1. On the inSync Master Management Console menu bar, click Users.
  2. Click the user name of the user whose data you want to restore. Click Restore > Restore Backup data.
  3. Search for emails that you want to restore. 
  4. Select the emails that you want to restore and click Restore.
  5. On the Restore window, provide details on the following:
    Field Action
    Restore to From the drop down list select the restore location. You can restore the emails to the either original user's account or to a different user's account.
    Select user This field is displayed only if you choose to restore the emails to a different user's account. Enter the required user's name.
  6. Click Ok.

To restore Contacts 

  1. On the inSync Master Management Console menu bar, click Users.
  2. Click the username of the user whose data you want to restore. Click Restore Backup Data.
  3. On the Restore Data window, under Device select Gmail to view its snapshots and backed up data. 
  4. Select Contacts and click Restore.
  5. On the Restore window, provide details on the following:
    Field Action
    Restore to From the drop-down list, select the restore location. You can restore the emails to the either original user's account or to a different user's account.
    Select user This field is displayed only if you choose to restore the emails to a different user's account. Enter the required user's name.
  6. Click Ok. During the Contacts restore activity, a separate contact list is created.

Note: While restoring Calendar events on Gmail "ErrorFolderSavePropertyError" error is displayed. This is API limitation as you cannot create calendar name with more than 256 characters.

To restore Calendar 

  1. On the inSync Master Management Console menu bar, click Users.
  2. Click the username of the user whose data you want to restore. Click Restore Backup Data.
  3. On the Restore Data window, under Device & Apps select Gmail to view its snapshots and backed up data. 
  4. Select Calendar and click Restore.
  5. On the Restore window, provide details on the following:
    Field Action
    Restore to From the drop-down list, select the restore location. You can restore the emails to the either original user's account or to a different user's account.
    Select user This field is displayed only if you choose to restore the emails to a different user's account. Enter the required user's name.
  6. Click Ok.

Note: During the Calendar restore activity a separate calendar is created.
